Triumph or Tacky?

13 Nov

Wow, I just realized that it’s been forever since I’ve written one of my Triumph or Tacky? posts! Looks like I’m going to have a lot of backlog to get through!

This post is going to address the black bag that I bought for the Weeks 31-32 Challenge. If you recall I was looking for a bag similar to one of these by Michael Kors:

Michael Kors Jenna Large Tote, $464 CAD Bloomingdale's

Michael Kors Gia Ostrich-Embossed Leather Satchel, $805 CAD Zappos Couture

And what I ended up finding was this bag from Aldo for a budget-busting $62.15 (after taxes):

Aldo Pressel, $55 (front view from the website)

Although votes were split three ways between “you did great”, “not quite close enough” and “better luck next time”, many of you pointed out that this was more than a tad expensive for a so-called “budget find”  and you were completely right. It was WAY too expensive and in all honesty not a worthwhile use of my Experiment money. This one unfortunately falls into Tacky territory.

The funny thing is that I knew this when I was buying it but for some reason I was in a “OMG I just need to buy something for this challenge!” state of mind.  So needless to say this challenge has ended up costing me even more money when you factor in the gas that I used driving back to the store to return it!

However, when I brought the Pressel bag back to Aldo I ended up coming across a bag that I like a lot more than the original bag:

Aldo Gillyard $39.98 (photo from the Aldo website)

Is it a perfect representation of either of the Michael Kors bags? No. But I think that it bears at least a small teeny tiny resemblance to the Jenna tote. Plus it has a really cute houndstooth lining and also a shoulder strap that’s handy (or shouldery I guess…pardon the awful pun).

It was still a bit over budget once the taxes were factored in ($45.18 total) but at least this time I can say that I’m comfortable paying the overage.

Hopefully I can find something more affordable for my next challenge though, my track record hasn’t been great lately and I’m starting to worry about my budget shopping abilities!

Triumph or Tacky?

17 Aug

It’s time for another Triumph or Tacky? post! If you recall, my last challenge was to find a pair of black work-appropriate sandals and I ended up finding an absolutely awesome pair at the Shoe Company:

The Shoe Company $38.13 (after discount)

I still adore the style of these shoes and I have had soooo many compliments on them! People in my office love them and I have even had a few strangers stop me on the street and ask me where I got them! So in that sense I consider this challenge a triumph!

BUT (there’s always a but in there somewhere isn’t there?) as much as I love these shoes and have been getting a lot of use out of them, they are starting to show signs of wear and tear. Notably, the patent is starting to rub off in a few places:

I actually noticed this after only wearing them twice so quality-wise they’re a little lacking. Also, just as a warning if you have bought these shoes they are a little slippery. I was walking through the mall one day and totally wiped out and the fact that I was wearing a white chiffon skirt that is on the shorter side only added to my embarrassment. Then again I am a bit of a klutz so I don’t know if I can fully blame the shoes for this one…

All in all I think that this challenge was still a triumph since I do love the look of these shoes, I just wish that the quality was a little better. I’m actually going to try some black nail polish over the areas where the patent has rubbed off so hopefully I can still get a lot of good use out of these shoes!

For the Weeks 15 and 16 challenge (if you recall this one stretched over two weeks since I was unsuccessful on my first attempt) I tried to find an athletic tank top with a built-in bra. Although I originally couldn’t find anything under $20, I ended up lucking out with one that I found at Foot Locker for $19.99!

I think that the purchase of this garment (along with the awesome running skirt that I bought for the Week 13 challenge) is very timely since I finally bit the bullet and registered for my first half-marathon! Eek! It’s in September and I need all of the help I can get with training,  that includes having cute running outfits for motivation! On top of that I’m doing a crazy Spartan Race in a week and a half so it looks like I will be living in workout wear outside of working hours for the next umm, 3 months or so…

So back to the tank top! According to all of the online votes everyone thought that I did great! It really is a  cute tank and I do love the fact that it’s a nice blue colour as opposed to my mostly pink workout wear. So far I have worn it twice, once to Dragon boat practice and once tonight for a run. I was going to wear it to the gym earlier this week but my gym has that silly rule that you can’t wear tank tops in co-ed workout areas. Again, apparently shoulders are just far too titillating for the boys around here!

Ignore the wet spot from Dragon boat practice, lol!

I do find that the tank is very comfortable however, my only complaint is that the bra part of it seems to stretch once it’s been worn for a little while. By the end of my run it felt much looser so I’m not quite sure how long I will be able to wear it if I drop some weight during training (which I inevitably tend to do).

So for now I’ll leave this Triumph or Tacky post open. At the moment the tank top is a Triumph but I’ll let you know if it moves into the Tacky realm (running with no support up top would definitely qualify as tacky!).

Well, that’s it from me for now! Results post coming up Saturday 😮

Triumph or Tacky?

9 Jun

This is yet again another catch-up Triumph or Tacky? post but this time it’s a double-header! I’m going to talk about the necklace that I bought for the Week 14 challenge and FINALLY get to the white shirt that I got for the Week 8 challenge (yeah I know, I should have done that one a long time ago!).

If you recall I bought a sliver multi-strand necklace with leucite beads from Jacob for my Week 14 challenge:

Necklace Jacob, shirt Costa Blanca

Overall I have to say that this challenge was a resounding success! Everyone who voted online thought that it was great and I got so many compliments at work! The thing that I love about this necklace is that it really is a great quality necklace (aka doesn’t look like junky costume jewellery) and seems to go with everything. I even wore it with the white dress shirt (see the last image below) and although it blended in with the white it added just a little bit of sparkle to an otherwise basic work outfit. I think that this one qualifies as a triumph!

Now to the white dress shirt that I bought at Costa Blanca for the Week 8 challenge (can you remember that far back?!):

Shirt Costa Blanca

This challenge, although successful, was somewhat less so than the necklace challenge. Not quite everyone thought that it was a great purchase. I think that overall it is a nice staple shirt. The fit is pretty good barring the fact that it’s slightly tight in the arms (but not tight enough to look bad in my opinion) but it isn’t exactly of supreme quality. I’ve only worn it once so I’ll let you know how it wears over time.

I did finally wear the shirt to work this week and no one mentioned anything about it, granted it is just a basic dress shirt though. Overall, I think that this challenge was also a triumph, just not an overwhelming one. I don’t think that it will make it into my top ten triumphs…

Well, that’s it for today. Results post coming up on Saturday!

Triumph or Tacky?

27 May

I am yet again playing post catch-up so here is another edition of Triumph or Tacky! This time I am going to report back on reactions to my Week 12 challenge colour blocking outfit.

I finally got a chance to wear the shirt and capris to a BBQ at my parent’s place last weekend and it seemed (to me) like the perfect outfit for a bright almost-summer evening in the backyard lounging by the pool!

Colourfully lounging by the (very cold!) pool

Although I think that the outfit is really fun and very summery I’m not sure that everyone agrees.

My Dad raised his eyebrows and murmured something about me joining the circus or marching in a parade (I’ll ignore that I heard that last remark) and my Mom gave me one of those “Well, I guess that you can get away with bright colours in the summer…” comments.

My husband was much more blunt telling me that he doesn’t like the capris at all “Because they’re purple” but he does like the shirt (orange just happens to be one of his favourite colours though).

At least the online votes were much more positive. Almost everyone thought that I did great on this challenge! Come to think of it though, someone voting that I did well fulfilling the challenge is not necessarily the same thing as them liking the actual outfit. Hmm…

For now I’m just going to pretend that everyone (family excluded) loved it, lol!

Results post tomorrow, stay tuned!

Triumph or Tacky?

25 May

Alright, so I’m going to try to get back on a schedule with my Triumph or Tacky? posts again! Today I’m going to write about last week’s challenge skirt and then later this week I’ll continue playing catch up with my other challenge outfits.

So I am happy to report that last week’s running skirt challenge was a resounding success! Everyone who voted thought that I did great and the family and friends that I showed the skirt to also really liked it!

I wore it out on a 5K run on Monday and I have to say that even though the run itself was a bit uncomfortable (it’s been awhile) the running skirt was extremely comfortable! I was very surprised!

I have found in the past that a lot of Old Navy clothing is cheaply made so I didn’t have high hopes for their athletic wear. I was also a little worried about the size of the skirt since their clothing runs quite large (again, back to my vanity sizing rant). I had nothing to worry about though, it fits perfectly!

The shorts under the skirt barely rode up during my run (much less than my more expensive Adidas running skirt), the skirt itself didn’t ride up at all, and even with some strong winds the skirt didn’t flip-up. On top of that, the fact that it has a drawstring waist meant that I could tighten it as much as I needed. I have to say, I am actually very impressed and it makes me want to check out their other athletic wear.

All in all I consider this challenge to be triumph! Thumbs up for Old Navy running skirts!

Triumph or Tacky?

27 Apr

It’s time again for my (supposedly) weekly edition of Triumph or Tacky?! I know that I still haven’t gotten around to writing Triumph or Tacky posts for the Week 8 white dress shirt challenge or the Week 9 ballet flat challenge but I promise that I will get to them soon! Although I have worn my ballet flats once I still haven’t gotten a chance to wear the white dress shirt yet so I will report back once I’ve worn the shirt and after I’ve worn the flats a few more times (so that I can adequately comment on their comfort).

So how did the Week 10 PS 1 Extra Large leather travel bag challenge work out? Well, if you can look past the fact that the Mossimo bag that I got is considered a knock-off I think that the challenge was a success! So far all of the votes are that I did great and when I brought the bag to a party I also got some good reactions!

Bag Mossimo, "dress" Sirens, jeans American Eagle, boots Aldo

Now you may notice in the photos that I am wearing the “dress” that I was supposed to return to Sirens after the Week 7 challenge. Unfortunately, I completely forgot and by the time I remembered it was too late to return it. Just to keep things honest I have removed $18.08 from the SpendThrift Savings Bank to compensate for this.

My attempt at a "fashiony" pose

Also, I’m not sure that I’m wild about the fact that I paired my riding boots with this outfit but in my defense we were going to a party at a friend’s place out in the country where we would be spending a lot of time outside so they seemed appropriate at the time. I think that this outfit would be much cuter with a funky pair of wedges.

Now back to the Mossimo bag. I actually found it quite interesting that no one I showed it to seemed to be particularly bothered by the fact that it is considered a knock-off. I suppose though that unless you’re really interested in fashion (or trademark infringement) you really wouldn’t notice or care. Also, I know many people who think that designer items are ridiculously overpriced to begin with so they would probably think that the knock-off version is a real “steal” (pardon the pun).

Most things considered I think that this challenge was a success (again, if you overlook the knock-off factor) and I am happy to report that the horrendous chemical smell that the bag is emitting is slowly dissipating over time! I’ll let you know how the bag has held up to wear and tear at a later date and if the smell has completely gone away (I’m really hoping it will!).

On a final note I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful and insightful comments on my vanity sizing post! I plan on replying to everyone as soon as I can, unfortunately it’s been a crazy week (tip: never paint your own kitchen cabinets, it is the most tedious, infuriating DIY project ever!!!) so I’ve been neglecting my blog a little bit. I really love the discussions in response to the post so thank you again for your comments and to IFB for featuring the post!
