Triumph or Tacky? Part 2

10 Sep

Alright, time to finally let you know what I decided to do for the Weeks 23-24 Challenge! If you recall I was looking for black shoes to wear around Paris and I ended up finding these at Winners:

Winners $29.99

Now although these flats are cute, I wasn’t complete sold on them so I went out shoe shopping again after the conclusion of the challenge. That’s when I came across (and bought!) these awesome motorcycle boots:

Aldo Halat $43.49

At this point I had a dilemma on my hands, should I return the black flats or should I keep both pairs of shoes? According to your opinions, most of you thought that I should keep the motorcycle boots. Keeping both pairs of shoes came a close second.

So what did I decide? Well, in the end I kept both pairs of shoes (and have adjusted the SpendThrift Savings Bank accordingly). This decision was actually made in the heat of the moment rather than after a lot of thought, lol. I was running late for work one morning, couldn’t find my old pair of black flats and the new pair was just sitting there so they kind of got chosen by default!

The flats are actually really comfortable, my only complaint is that they’re a little loose (which is more my fault than that of the shoes) so I may need to find a pair of those little socks that fit into flats invisibly. We’ll see. I think that I will find a way to make them work somehow.

I haven’t had a chance to wear the motorcycle boots yet since I haven’t gotten around to putting leather protector on them but that’s on the agenda for this weekend so hopefully I’ll wear them this week. I’ll post a picture when I do wear them, they do look pretty cute with a skirt 😮

That’s it for me for now, tomorrow I’m off to shop for my current challenge!

Week 16 Results

After searching high and low for an athletic tank top, and after an unsuccessful first attempt in my Week 15 challenge, I am happy to say that I was finally successful! Fortuitous may be the better word though since my search was not without difficulty.

I though that after failing last week and increasing my budget from $20 to $40 that I would have a much easier time finding a tank top. Well, I was WRONG! Even with $40 everything that I came across was still too expensive! The big chain sporting good stores like SportChek and Sports Experts had tons of great tank tops with built-in bras by companies like Adidas, Nike, Puma, Roxy, and Under Armour, but they were all over $50! I have to say, my shopping was getting a little frustrating.

It wasn’t until my husband and I were randomly at the mall one night that I had some success. We just happened to notice a Foot Locker (I didn’t even know that Foot Locker still existed!) and on a rack at the front of the store was a really cute blue tank top:

Foot Locker, front

Foot Locker, back

I figured that it would be way over budget but amazingly when I looked at the tag it was only $19.99! We sort of did a double-take at first not quite believing the price. We then couldn’t help but laugh when the sales associate told us that the store didn’t have a change room so I couldn’t even try it on (the sales associate rolled his eyes and completely agreed with us when we mentioned what’s the point of selling clothing if customers can’t try anything on?). Thankfully they had a full money back guarantee (I’ve learned after the Sirens incident).

After taxes my purchase came to a total of $22.59 leaving me with a whopping $17.41 for the SpendThrift Savings Bank! Woo hoo!

I was even happier when I got home and tried it on and it fit very comfortably! So here it is on me at Dragonboat practice today…yes, I have added yet another activity into my schedule BUT the Dragonboat festival is next weekend so then it will be done, AND Dragonboating is absolutely without a doubt the best sport that I have ever tried 🙂 Pardon the big wet spot in the picture, we end up a little soggy by the time practice is over:

Please pardon the wet spot, crazy hair, and pants that look too short, lol! Tank top Foot Locker, pants Costco, sunglasses Fauxkleys from a kiosk at the mall

And here’s the back showing the crisscross detail:

I’m really happy with my purchase, time to hear what you think!

Week 6 Results

19 Mar

I fully admit that I neglected my blog this week. I really meant to write at least one other post but I ended up getting completely sick so I chose to focus on getting better for my trip. That meant a lot of time in bed and not much time in front of my computer so I apologize!

Next week I will also be absent from blogging but at least I have a much more festive reason for it, I’m leaving for Mexico in a matter of hours! So what does that mean for the SpendThift Experiment? Well, it’s going on hiatus for a week. The Week 7 challenge will begin on Monday the 29th leaving me with one less shopping day for that challenge. It’s a price I’m willing to pay for laying on a beach for a week 😮

So how did I do for the Week 6 challenge? Well after some serious shopping (thankfully right before I got really sick) I managed to find a great fedora at Old Navy:

Old Navy $14.50

I found it in the menswear section and I really like that it’s a darker brown colour. I wasn’t really a big fan of their women’s fedoras since they were a much lighter straw colour but they were still cute. I know that this hat isn’t nearly as nice or as well constructed as the Banana Republic hat that I fell in love with:

Banana Republic $50

But it’s still a fun hat and will hopefully hold up to the elements. It’s also much more affordable coming in at $16.39 with taxes:

That leaves $3.61 for the SpendThrift Savings Bank!

And how does the fedora look on me?

You’ll have to excuse the creative license that I took with this picture. As I mentioned I’ve been sick so I look like something the cat dragged in (and then proceeded to drag up and down the stairs several times). I promise that I’ll take a much better picture (aka one where I’m not deliberately hiding my face) on my trip and will post it when I get back.

So what do you think?

One last note. There will be no Triump or Tacky? post this week but there will be a double post the week after for both the fedora and the Week 5 challenge ring.

Now I’m off to pack my bags! See you all in a week!

Week 5 Results

13 Mar

I have done my shopping for the week and now it’s time to show you what I bought! If you recall, this week’s challenge was inspired by rose quartz rings that I found online. I was particularly interested in finding one with yellow gold. So here’s what I found:

I got this ring at Aldo and it came in at a very affordable $9.04! That leaves $10.96 for the SpendThrift Savings Bank!

In terms of rose quartz rings I didn’t find that much out there. There was one at the Bay that was way out of my price range ($120) and another at Ardene that was very affordable ($4.50) but definitely looked cheap. I would recommend looking online if you want something similar that is more high-end or  is made of actual metal and stone (the one I bought is pretty much all plastic). All in all though I’m happy with the ring that I found and I hope that it stands up to the sun and surf of Mexico 😮 I’ll let you know. I think that I’ll wait to do my “Triumph or Tacky?” post after I get back from my trip.

All things considered even though I didn’t find many rose quartz rings I did notice a lot of pretty yellow gold costume jewelery out there in rose tones especially at Aldo:

Aldo

And these aren’t even the best pieces that I saw! Unfortunately, they don’t sell all of their products on their website but if you like the look of yellow gold with natural stones in soft pastel tones they have some really beautiful products right now.

So now it’s time for your opinion! How do you think I did in this week’s challenge?

The Savings Bank (and an ode to Louboutins)

17 Feb

With one challenge under my belt (and amazingly some change leftover from my first purchases!) I figured that I should outline what happens to the money that I don’t spend. I have decided that every week I will add the remaining money into a little piggy bank that I will call the SpendThrift Savings Bank:

My purse bank 😮 Thanks Mom!

So how much money is in the savings bank at the moment? I have a grand total of $6.53 (at some point I’ll see if I can arrange a widget in the sidebar that always has the tally going). I’ll be interested to see how much this savings bank grows over time.

Now what is the purpose of this savings bank? Well I figured that with the exception of pulling out some money to cover the shipping costs associated with my one online shopping cheat  (see the rules for further clarification), I will let my leftover challenge money accumulate over the course of the entire experiment and buy something fun at the end of it!  Do I have any ideas for what would qualify as “something fun”? Hmm, let me think about this for about a nanosecond…

Christian Louboutin Maudissima $595

Ahhh, *swoon*….

Christian Louboutin Very Prive $795

Double *swoon*

If you are questioning my sanity or ability to do math yes I realize that even if I manage to save $5 from each weekly challenge that only brings me to $260 at the end of the year. However, I am hoping that by the end of this experiment I am gainfully employed and I can use my SpendThrift savings bank money as a down payment on a beautiful pair of signature red soles. I may not even be able to walk in the pair of shoes that I decide to buy (Louboutins do come with certain risks) but really, sitting shoes have their merits too right?

I have loved Christian Louboutin shoes ever since I first saw them years ago. When I was planning my wedding I was downright obsessed with one pair in particular:

Christian Louboutin Rosazissimo

I kept imagining myself walking down the aisle (ok, beach in my case) wearing my beautiful “something blues”. However, the $995 price tag coupled with the fact that heels and sand aren’t really a good mix meant that they just weren’t an option. Come to think of it they really wouldn’t have fit with my Grecian-style dress but really, I didn’t care at the time. I knew that no one else at my wedding would have cared that I was wearing Louboutins (some friends even told me to find a pair of *gasp* knock-offs) but I would have known and that would have been enough for me! I did find a perfect pair of Jimmy Choos as an alternative but Louboutins still would have been the epitome of luxury and I still think that they make amazing shoes that are perfect for weddings:

Christian Louboutin N°Prive Riche

Well I think that I’ve gushed enough about Louboutins for one day. My next post will be the Week 2 result post!
